Supplementing Your Diet

Kelli and I have been getting a lot of questions about what supplements we take.  So, I thought it might be helpful if we shared what we're taking and why we chose those supplements.

When I was pregnant with my Sweet Pea, I was anemic.  My midwife recommended that I take an herbal iron supplement instead of a pill.  She recommend Herbal Iron from Mountain Meadow Herbs.  I started taking it and I immediately felt a difference!  I was intrigued with the idea of taking herbs as a way to get the nutrients my body needed.

This, in part, led me to become a certified Family Herbalist.  During the coursework, I realized that I would be a lot better off getting my vitamins and minerals from whole food sources.  One benefit from using whole foods is that I don't have to make sure that my calcium has vitamin D and magnesium to go with it, or that my iron has vitamin C!

As I continue to research and figure out what my body needs, I've added a couple other herbal mixtures to my daily routine.  Most mornings I make a smoothie for breakfast.  For an added nutrition boost, I add chia seeds and this mix from the Bulk Herb Store.  With this smoothie, I'm getting a great boost right away in the morning (and can sometimes even convince my kids to have some ;) ).

During the day I drink a lot of herbal teas.  They are my go to drink.  One of my favorites is the Mama's Red Raspberry Brew.  What am I getting by drinking this?  Red raspberry leaf is filled with essential minerals and vitamins like magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, vitamin C, E, A and B complex. It also contains easily assimilated calcium and iron. 




Another favorite is the Dr Cinnamon tea.  Cinnamon has been shown to significantly lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. Cinnamon also has the remarkable ability to reduce inflammation in the body. 

With these few additions to a fairly good diet, I have been able to get all the nutrients that my body needs.

I always walked through the vitamin aisles at the stores and got so overwhelmed.  While I did Weight Watchers they insisted that everyone take a multivitamin so I always bought whichever was cheapest at the store and normally remembered to take it every day.  When I was pregnant my doctor prescribed me a prenatal vitamin and an iron pill (I was anemic with my first two pregnancies) that I would take religiously and would throw up half the time.

Then I started working with a lady that sold Juice Plus and I started buying that and I took it often because it was so expensive and it came to my house monthly!  When I started working with a personal trainer she told me about a lot of supplements that I decided to try and I stopped taking Juice Plus.  However, I realized that I was still shelling out a lot of money and not really seeing or feeling any different.

During my pregnancy with Anna I started reading more about real food diets and the belief that if you are eating a variety of fruits, vegetables, and meats from reputable sources that you don't necessarily need a ton of supplements.  I began investigating that theory more and decided that since I don't take any of my supplements religiously that I would try that out.

My family and I are all healthy and when we do get a check up or blood work done we are all in healthy ranges.  During the winter or when we are around sick people I use herbs and oils to boost our immune systems. I make sure that we literally eat a "rainbow" daily.  I make sure that we get in healthy fats and I have a lot more room in my cabinets because I don't have a bunch of bottles that we aren't using in there!

Mom 4ce Plus???

Since life wasn't crazy enough for Team Freese, we decided to mix it up a little.  You know, boring and calm is just well; boring!
I was feeling a little tired and stressed out.  I figured that it was just from getting MOPS off the ground for the year and starting the school year up was taking its toll.  
After almost passing out at our first MOPS meeting I decided that MAYBE I should go to the doctor.  Then, my coffee smelled weird to me and I didn't WANT coffee.  
That's when I knew.... Yep, the Freese 6 will be the Freese 7 in May!  
Lynette has decided to let me stay with Mom 4ce even though I will no longer be a 4ce but a 5ce.  However, that sounds ridiculous so we are not changing the name.  
What does this mean for you?  It means that you will get to read about what I am doing diet and nutrition wise throughout this pregnancy. Don't worry though, it won't ALL be about pregnancy!  
However, I do want to tell you the first thing that I have done is started consuming Red Raspberry Leaf Tea.  This is something everyone benefits from and I should have been drinking it before but it wasn't coffee.  However, I have so much energy and so little nausea that I refuse to go without it now!  Non pregnant women have even noticed a difference in their cycles while drinking it so I plan on continuing chugging this brew after our baby comes.  
Other than expecting, Team Freese is busy packing.  Our closing date has been moved back a little but time is flying quickly.  The kids are enjoying a laid back school year, little do they know that this summer will make up for it, bahahaha!

Lacto- fermented Herbal Tea

My first experimentation with fermenting herbal teas was with a red raspberry leaf and mint blend.  It turned out ok.  It had a flavor that reminded me of honey and lemon.


My next try was using the Dr Cinnamon tea from the Bulk Herb Store.  This one turned out much better!



Ingredients:
1 quart of fresh water
1/4 cup loose herbal tea of choice
3 tablespoons honey
1/3 cup whey from yogurt or kefir or a few tablespoons of lacto-fermented vegetable brine 

Instructions:
Prepare the herbal tea by bringing the water to a boil.
Add the 1/4 cup herbs to a quart jar and pour boiling water over herbs. 
Cover and allow to steep for at least 10 minutes to extract the properties of the herbs.
Strain the tea from the herbs into another quart jar. 
Add sweetener while still hot in order to dissolve the sugars. 
Allow to cool to room temperature with a lid on to keep out dust and bugs.
When the tea and sweetener have cooled add the whey or other culture starter. 
Stir well with a wooden spoon, cover loosely with either a towel and rubber band or a fermenting lid.
Place in a dark, warm place for a couple of days and check for fermentation. 

Is it slightly sour or slightly fizzy? If you desire a more carbonated drink you can add a bit more sweetener and cap the jar tightly. After another day (three total, depending on temperature) you should have a bubbly brew.

Drink immediately or move to cold storage.

This is a great way to get some probiotics and IMO, is a nice, refreshing drink after a run =)
