Christmas Tea

It's that time of year again.  The time of year when Sarge asks me to buy all the fixin's for Christmas tea.  This is one recipe that I cannot (according to him) make healthy.  It only tastes good if you use the bad for you stuff =)

So, here's to an unhealthy, but delicious hot beverage.

one container ice tea mix
one container lemonade mix
one container Tang (it has to be Tang!)
cinnamon to taste
nutmeg to taste

Mix everything together in a large seal-able container.  Mix 2-3 teaspoons in a mug of hot water and enjoy!

Simplify the Season

It’s that time of year again.  When everyone goes crazy trying to find the perfect gift, plan the perfect dinner, make sure everyone has the perfect Christmas.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if there was a step by step guide to the perfect Christmas?  No more wondering if this is what it takes.  Just follow these simple steps and *Poof* a perfect Christmas every time.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way.  But, there are things we can do to reduce the stress associated with this time of year.

First, decide ahead of time who you are getting gifts for.  Try to keep the list to just the most important people.  We keep our list pretty simple- the kids, parents and our nieces.

For those other people who you feel the need to get a gift for, remember that homemade gifts- a dozen cookies, homemade hot chocolate mix…- are just as appreciated as the store bought ones.

Next, decide how much you are willing to spend in total and on each person.  Years ago, we instituted a $20 limit (we raised the limit for our kids).  The limit has made it so much easier to shop.  It’s also made us more creative in what we give.  Last year I spent the nieces’ budget on yarn and crocheted items that they had asked for- which would have cost more than the limit if I had bought them.

Once the gifts are taken care of, decide on the decorating.  Since we are limited on space (remember the whole living in a camper and sharing space in my mother- in- love’s house?) we have the kids pick out the items they like the best and then leave the decorating in one room.  Because we’re out in the country, we don’t feel the need to decorate outside.  Even if you live in town, don’t feel like you have to decorate outside.  A simple wreath on the door can be just enough.

If you’re hosting Christmas dinner, plan a simple menu.  You don’t have to have twenty items on the table.  The fewer the dishes, the less likely you are to over stuff yourself!  For Thanksgiving this year, we had smoked venison roast, wild rice dressing, green bean casserole, deviled eggs, cranberry sauce and dessert.  Everyone had enough to eat and didn’t leave feeling like they had eaten too much!

Don’t be afraid to leave the china on the shelf.  Use paper plates and plastic silverware.  Then no one has to be stuck washing dishes (because we all know you can never fit all the dishes in the dishwasher).

But most of all, remember the true reason for the season.

Luke 2:8-12
8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

Christmas Fun

He who has not Christmas in his heart will never find it under a tree.  ~Roy L. Smith

I found this quote while I was "researching" (playing) on the computer today.  My husband and I have been trying to wrap gifts for the last two or three night.  It's been a challenge but we finally accomplished it tonight.  We have had a fun night of watching a movie and getting the kids presents wrapped.  I can't wait to see their faces on Christmas morning when they unwrap everything!
Last night we went over to my sister-in-laws house and celebrated my mother and father-in-laws birthday's as well as exchanged gifts with my sister-in-law and her family.  The kids have been so happy to play with the new toys today since I packed up half of their stuff yesterday.
How are your Christmas plans going this year?  Are you taking the time to enjoy it?

Christmas Traditions

When my Dad and Step-mom got married we were initiated into her family and all of their Christmas traditions.  I had never been a part of a family that did Christmas quite like hers and seriously they DID Christmas.  We had a big decorating of the tree time where we pulled out each ornament and talked about it because each one had sentimental value.  We had a special night where we went to look at Christmas lights.  There were certain movies that we watched while eating a big bowl of popcorn and drinking homemade hot cocoa.  On the 22nd we got together with another family and exchanged gifts, we then got together as a family and exchanged gifts while eating Mexican food on Christmas Eve.  Then there was all of the fun of opening gifts and spending time together reading Luke 2 on Christmas Day.  We had a lot of other traditions including pictures with Santa, puzzles, games, etc that we did during the month of December and it all seemed so special and sacred.  However, the biggest thing that stood out to me was that it was a time of focusing on Christ and His birth.  My Dad made sure that we focused on Advent as a family and that we talked about the importance of Christ's birth.
This year I have struggled with keeping Christmas special as a family.  We don't have a tree, I haven't pulled out any decorations, and we haven't baked any cookies.  No, I'm not a Grinch...our family is still in the process of closing on our house in Austin and we are moving literally a day or two after Christmas.  However, this stripped down Christmas has somehow become very special to me.  We have literally stripped it down to the bare bones and it's beautiful.  The kids understand that we are giving them very little this year and yet they are receiving so much more than Mary and Joseph had when Jesus was born in that manger so long ago.
I was afraid that by not decorating our house like I have in the past would deprive my kids of the joy of Christmas but in reality it has made all of us enjoy the real meaning of Christmas so much more.  It is more poignant and beautiful than ever this year, and I am so glad that I am finally learning that bigger and elaborate doesn't always mean better.

The Twelve Days of Christmas

A couple of years ago my favorite trainer had us do a Twelve Days of Christmas workout.
I don't remember what it was exactly but thought it would be fun to do another one.
Do this workout every other day up until Christmas to get you in the Christmas Spirit.  I refuse to promise dramatic changes in your body composition by doing this workout but who knows, it might just happen.

1 Pushup
2 Burpees
3 Squats
4 Alternating Lunges
5 Sit Ups
6 High Knees
7 Jumping Jacks
8 Star Jumps
9 Flutter Kicks
10 High Knees
11 Tricep Dips
12 Plie' Squats

So here's how this works.  Do all twelve days of the workout every day. Start with day one and just do the first exercise and then do day one and day two and so forth all the way up to day twelve.  Basically you are doing a "pyramid" workout.  If you want more of a challenge do a lap after each day.
